Little Jack flies them directly over the area that the island is supposed to be.  The fog obscures the entire area, but deep scans can see that something is indeed down there.

Lancaster goes back to the hatch wearing his gear.  He calls to Little Jack on the intercom, and a red light next to the hatch glows as an alarm sounds.  Then the hatch pulls open and the cold air rushes against Lancaster.  He stands his ground a moment, allowing the pressure to equalize.  Then he leaps out and allows himself to fall away from the vessel.

A few seconds later he activates the glider.  Wings unfurl from his back and small engines unfold from them.  He holds onto the steering sticks on either side of him that reach down from the glider, and with these controls he rolls down toward the fog.

He begins to glide across the top wisps of the fog when suddenly a beast leaps out of them.  It's a long, muscular bird with no feathers, but tiny hairs that grow out of it irregularly, like patches of grass on a poorly cared for lawn.  It resembles a pterodactyl, but with muted gray-green fuzz.

It sees Lancaster as a threat, and swoops in after him.  Lancaster only knows a few maneuvers in this thing.

Which maneuver will Lancaster try?

Try to lose it in the clouds

Catch a gust to lift up above the creature

Do a corkscrew to try to make it dizzy
